Here’s a confession. Yes, I got to admit I am a sucker for the National Novel Writing Month, popularly called NaNoWriMo. I was initially hesitant about signing up for NaNo this year. Let me hasten to add that I have great regard for this initiative. It won’t be wrong to say that a large share for whatever little success I have enjoyed as a writer clearly goes to NaNoWriMo and all the Wrimos who I have interacted with. For the uninitiated, “Wrimos” are the folks who take part in NaNoWriMo.
I can never forget that my debut novel, “It Can’t Be You”, a psychological thriller came out of my debut effort in NaNoWriMo in November 2009. It was published in November 2010.
The hesitation sprung only from a consideration of my tasks at hand. After all, I have a book release towards the end of November-early December, 2012. I eagerly await the launch of ” Lucky For Some, 13″ which came out of my NaNoWriMo effort of November 2010.
Next, I have commitments to complete the second part of a non-fiction work in progress. I want to close this by the end of December 2012, under any circumstances. The third project I am immersed in is the editing of ” Let The Dead Stay Dead for which I wrote the first 50,000 words last year for NaNoWriMo of 2011. With so much on my plate, did it make sense to take the plunge and attempt to write 50,000 words in the calendar month of November 2012? Did I want to commit myself to ” thirty days and nights of literary abandon?”
When I tuned in to the NaNoWriMo website and looked at the forums, I changed my mind. I said I would do NaNoWriMo in November 2012, come what may! I have signed on taking up the challenge once again.
This time, for a change, I have decided to become a “rebel” and not write a novel as such but an anthology of short stories which I have tentatively called, “A Bouquet From India” since they will, for the most part, be set in my country.
Take it from one who has thoroughly enjoyed doing NaNoWriMo for the past three years in running, it is great fun! What are you waiting for? The count down timer on the website says you and I have about 13 days 9 hours and 50 minutes before we get cracking on November 1. Aren’t you signing up too?
